JUCO is Julia Galdo and Cody Cloud. They are a collaborative creative direction duo, and are blowing up in the commercial and advertising photography world. Photographed by David Cortes - who is also their assistant - they talk to us about their dream clients and creative process.
Where are you originally from, and where do you currently live?
We both live in Eagle Rock, Ca. Julia was born and raised in Miami, Fl. And Cody was born and raised in Phoenix, Az.
Tell us a little about yourself?
Well - Cody is the relaxed one. Julia is the high strung one. Cody is the technical one. Julia is the painterly one. Cody is the nerdy one. Julia is the producer one. We both met in College at the San Francisco Art Institute. We have been friends since 2002.
What excites you most about your work and the work of your peers/ friends?
It feels like anything is possible.
Explain your creative process.
Well, because there’s two of us, we have to have the creative dialog externally - with each other. When a project comes up, we both take a few days to digest it and pull up our own instinctive references. Then we meet about it and put all the references together - explaining to each other why we might have pulled each image. Then we extract all of the references that we are both gravitating to - and usually its a mix of each of our own personal styles. And from there we flush out our concepts.
What are some things that you enjoy outside of photography?
We both really enjoy plants, interior decorating, the beach, and thrifting so much.
What's a typical day like for you?
There are no typical days. Ever!
Dream clients to work for?
Some we’ve already shot for: Target, Nike, Time, Complex, enRoute, VH1, Warner Brother Records. People we would kill to shoot for - Barneys, Kate Spade, Prada, Starwood hotels - the list goes on.
Any closing words of wisdom?
Look at a lot of work - always. It helps define your own style and why you like things or not.
